With a bumper crop of Bank Holidays happening here in England at the moment, there’s never been a better time to throw your favourite food and people into the back of the car and head off into the great outdoors for a weekend of adventures. Here at Jacaranda, we don’t believe that al fresco dining should be any less fantastic than a full-on sit-down meal indoors, so here are some thoughts to help you create a picnic feast in your hamper.
For us, a perfect picnic might just be a refined pinch of antipasti, with tantalising continental meats including parma ham, prosciutto, chorizo and salami, a sprinkling of olives and sun blushed tomatoes, a generous dollop of mozzarella (or your creamy cheese of preference) and, of course, lashings of fresh bread. You’ll pick your way easily through this platter and, because it’s such a sociable dish, it’s great for sharing in large groups as you chat the afternoon away.
Speaking of cheese, we think a Ploughmans picnic or a straight-up cheeseboard is a quintessentially British accompaniment to an afternoon of wandering. Make sure you remember to pack the chutney, grapes and a sprinkling of crudités alongside your favourite fromage and crispiest biscuits. If you’re feeling particularly lavish, pop a bottle of port in that picnic basket too.
Alternatively, if you want something a bit healthier, then a picnic is the perfect excuse for packing plenty of lovely local fresh veg and salad. There’s no reason you can’t bring along some glorious kebab skewers stacked with veg (and chicken or prawns if you fancy it) but mountains of salad will always provide excellent nibbles for no extra effort.
Of course, for many people a picnic remains a delight of afternoon tea tastiness, from finger sandwiches to Victoria sponge, and every scone, macaron and patisserie delicacy in-between. If you want to include something a bit messy, think about creating individual portions in jam jars or kilner jars, so you can still take that trifle out and about with you!
Whatever your preference, a picnic is a wholly lovely indulgence, so make sure your basket is packed with all of your favourite things and enjoy a long weekend!
